Gallatin County Sheriff’s investigators are beginning to piece-together the events that lead to the death of
35 year-old Dustin Kjersem, found dead inside his tent at Moose Creek, near Big Sky. He had extensive injuries to his skull and body. Initially, it was thought to be a bear attack. Not so…
We’ve learned that 41-year old Daren Christopher Abbey has confessed to Kjersem’s murder. He’s in the Gallatin County jail–without bail, charged with Deliberate Homicide and Tampering with Evidence.
Here’s what we’ve learned: Kjersem expected by his girlfriend later than night. When he didn’t return, she drove to the campsite, finding Kjersem’s body, which she later learned was hacked up with what appeared to be an ax.
Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer confirms that Abbey confessed to bludgeoning Kjersem, initially with a piece of wood, then stabbing him in the neck with a screwdriver, and then an ax. Sheriff Springer says the motive remains unclear.
