Standard Time Returns Sunday

This weekend is “time-change weekend”.  Sunday morning, we return to Standard Time, so we “fall back” an hour, beginning officially when 2AM becomes 1AM. That means we reclaim that hour of sleep we missed last Spring. We’ll remain on Standard Time until March 9th, when we’ll once-again turn on Daylight Savings Time. There are those who want to see the time-change end. “Pick one”, they say. The U.S. actually did that…and not so long ago. It was 1973 and the country was in the throws of the gas shortage. There were long lines at gas stations that were waiting for fuel trucks to arrive. In some areas, there were “even and odd” fill-up days, depending on the last numbers on the license plate. Congress voted in late 1973 to make Daylight Savings Time permanent for 2-years. President Nixon signed it and away we went! Kids were going to school in the dark with safety concerns from schools and parents alike. Schools delayed their start-times and other changes needed to be made. By 1979, the country was ready to give up on “one-standard-time.”
