Flathead County Commissioners Weigh Environmental Concerns in Steamboat Landing Subdivision Decision

The Flathead County Commissioners have yet to approve a major subdivision project near Somers, known as Steamboat Landing, which is proposed to cover nearly 64 acres and include 180 single-family homes and 72 condo units near Somers Middle School. The Commissioners are exercising caution in their decision, fully aware that rejecting the project could lead to a legal battle. Their primary concern revolves around ensuring that the area meets EPA standards due to its proximity to a Superfund site, as well as the need for utilities to access the site safely. The North Shore Water Alliance has called for an updated environmental assessment before any approval is granted. Meanwhile, the developers contend that the location is well-suited for residential development and would address the Valley’s pressing need for more housing. As discussions continue, the Commissioners are weighing both environmental considerations and the potential benefits of the proposed development for the community.
