Montana Moves Closer to Online Voter Registration as Legislators Draft Provisional Bill

Montana legislators have taken an important step towards potentially becoming the 44th state to permit online voter registration. In an 8-2 vote on Tuesday, the State Administration and Veterans’ Affairs Interim Committee decided to proceed with drafting a provisional bill for the new measure. During the committee meeting, testimony was provided by election experts and representatives from Montana’s Motor Vehicle Division, who discussed the details of the proposed online registration process and the various options available. This development comes in response to a recent push by Secure Democracy USA, which had urged legislators to advance the proposal. Despite broad bipartisan support, there are concerns about the security of the online system. Republican Senator Mike Cuffe of Eureka voiced his apprehensions, stating, “Granted, I’m a dinosaur and I have trouble understanding all of the electronic processes. But I don’t trust all of them. And especially with the increasing development of artificial intelligence and robotic kind of answers.” The bill will now move through the legislative process as Montana considers joining the growing number of states embracing digital voter registration.
