A large portion of Flathead Lake’s North shore, between Bigfork & Somers has closed to support migrating and nesting birds. The Flathead Waterfowl Production Area takes-up 7-miles of shoreline and the north end of the lake, filled with habitats critical for migrating birds to rest and nest.
Human disturbance, including walking near birds or nesting areas or letting dogs run off leash, can cause serious harm during these vulnerable periods, forcing many to abandon their nests and depart the area. More than 200-bird species utilize the area.
We can still access Somers Beach State Park and the Osprey View property along Holt Drive near Bigfork. Parking there is limited and dogs must be on-leash.
