The Flathead County Commissioners have voted to move forward with Steamboat Landing – a massive Somers subdivision proposal. The development would occupy nearly 64 acres with 180 single family homes and 72 condo units near the Somers Middle School.
The North Shore Water Alliance wanted an updated assessment, which will be reviewed by the Planning Board, to make double sure the area meets EPA standards since the project would be adjacent to a Superfund site where utilities would have to have access. The report, prepared by Big Sky Civil & Environmental in Great Falls, has determined that “widespread contamination of the property does not appear to exist.” Any contaminants found were far below DEQ limits.
Besides the environmental impacts, many are concerned about increased traffic on Hwy 82 and School Addition Road and impacts on the new Somers Beach State Park.
The plan is to develop the 64 acres in five phases, completing it all in 2033.
