What worries most Montanans? Almost 3-out-of-4 of us don’t think we’ll be able to afford housing over the next five years. That’s the conclusion of the Montana Free Press-Eagleton Poll. The poll also found that 2-in-5 Montanans are spending more than 30% of their income on rent or house payments.
The concerns about affordable housing reach across all demographics, noting that as respondents aged, their concerns lessened…but 2-out-of-3 over 65 say they’re concerned; 91% of those between 35 and 49 are concerned, the poll says.
Montana’s population has increased 26% in the past four years. Increases in the cost of homes has pushed property taxes to an all-time high, which the Legislature is working to resolve in the remaining 40 days of their current session.
