The Alpine Section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road is partially closed because of wintry conditions. We can still get in from West Glacier up to Avalanche, but the rest of the way to the Summit is closed.
However, the route to the summit from the St Mary’s entrance has reopened.
Upper elevation snowfall, without the ability to bring-in snowplows–because of the Government Shutdown, put the likelihood of reopening in question. Normally, crews begin getting the roadway prepared for winter in mid-October, but this year, those activities appear to be curtailed due the the Government Shutdown.
Some of the things crews must do before serious snowfall are roadway prep, taking down the removable guardrails and essentially winterizing the restrooms and other facilities along the way at at the Logan Pass Visitors Center.
This week, KGEZ Meteorologist Sally Russell is predicting cooler nights, with temps dipping into the mid-20s at upper elevations.
