A long legal road is ahead for 45-year-old Michael Paul Brown who remains in Butte Silver Bow County Detention Center where he’s been since his capture early Friday afternoon.
In a brief video appearance before Anaconda-Deer Lodge Justice of the Peace Ken Walund, bail was set at $2-million. Brown affirmed that he would like to be represented by a court-appointed public defender. Butte attorney Walter Hennessey said he’d help Brown fill out the necessary application.
An arraignment will be set in a few days to present the charges against the man who’s accused of shooting the bartender and three patrons at the Owl Bar in Anaconda. The court filings against Brown are sealed by the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County District Court.
An Army veteran, Brown served a tour in Iraq and is said to have been suffering from mental disorders ever since, including post-traumatic stress disorder.
Brown was taken out of the wilderness near the Ranch Bar on Montana Highway 1, about midway between Anaconda and Georgetown Lake. No further details have been released about the capture or what led searchers to the vicinity of the Bar.
