Two women, living up in the Canyon, are in trouble for harboring 27-dogs on their property. 55-year old Candy Jean Evans was arrested back on March 13th, charged with felony animal cruelty. At the time of her arrest, Deputies seized the dogs, along with one dead puppy. Her arraignment date hasn’t been scheduled in Flathead County District Court.
The dogs were placed into the custody of the Flathead Animal Shelter, where Shelter Director Austin Hicks tells us the dogs have been examined by a vet. He says there are more dogs than can be absorbed into the shelter, so some were sent to other shelters across the state. Eventually, once the dogs are determined to be healthy again, they’ll be eligible for adoption.
This is a situation that has been brewing for months. Last summer, the Sheriff’s animal control officers investigated reports of someone shooting at the dogs. At the time, Evans’ sister, Lavina, relinquished 5-puppies over to the Animal Shelter. They were found to have parvovirus, quarantined and treated. They all survived.
But there were more encounters with the sisters and their dogs before removing the dogs from the property. None of the dogs are available for adoption until the case is adjudicated
