A fiery small plane crash at the Ferndale Airfield has resulted in the death of the pilot. The plane is classified by the FAA has experimental–that is to say not built by a licensed manufacture, is a Murphy Moose.
Sheriff Brian Heino tells us the craft burst into flames when it crashed while landing on the grass runway. The NTSB is investigating the cause of the crash.
The Murphy Moose is a home-built, kit that seats up to 6. The manufacturer says the craft than be built by one person and can carry up to 1800-pounds safely. It can take off in 800-feet and land in 600-feet. The company says it’s designed to be a compatible bush airplane and can even be designed for water landings.
Fully-fueled, the Murphy Moose can travel up to 500-miles with 100-gallons of fuel onboard.
