Gov. Greg Gianforte has vetoed the bipartisan bill phasing out the use of Styrofoam in Montana. Recent research shows the average American consumes the equivalent of a credit card’s worth of plastic every week.
As he vetoed the bill, Gianforte said, “Banning Styrofoam is costly government overreach and, like many Montanans, I enjoy hot coffee in a Styrofoam cup because it keeps it hot…and this bill is a hot mess.”
He says the phase out would have cost taxpayers $300,000.
State Rep Marilyn Marler, a Democrat from Missoula says the Governor, ” …completely missed the point that it’s supported by members of both parties in the Legislature.” She noted strong testimony and support from business owners and from farmers.”
