The 10th Annual Gus Thompson Memorial Baseball games begin at 11:00 next Saturday morning at Thompson Field, at 8th Avenue East and 9th Street, on Kalispell’s East side. The games honor Gus Thompson, thought to be the “father of Kalispell baseball”, who lived in Kalispell while he pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series game in 1903.
First up, Pee Wee League Majors’ Rocky Mountain Builders Vs. the Sunriser Lions at 11:00. Then, at 1:00, the Minor League game, pitting Purity Health against Jordahl & Sliter.
Following his retirement from baseball, Gus and his wife, who was a Kalispell native, moved to Kalispell and ran a pool hall and cigar store–perhaps the first sports bar in our city. He died in 1958 at the age of 80.
Those planning to attend the games should bring their own seating.
