This year’s General Hunting Season is being characterized as a major success with more hunters reporting the harvest of more deer and elk than last year. In fact, more than 7,400-hunters have seen a 9.8% success rate, compared with 7.5% a year ago. It looks like the “rut” has kicked-in. A total of 625 white-tailed deer have been reported at the check stations compared to 382 a year ago.
Of the 4-check stations in NW Montana, the Olney station, on Hwy 93 North saw the highest hunter success at just over 12%. In second place, the Thompson Falls site, on Hwy 200, saw a nearly 10% success rate. Next, west of Kalispell on Hwy 2, where hunters check-in a 9.6% success rate. The Hwy 83 Swan Lake check-station found a little less than 5% success rate.
General Hunting Season continues through dusk on Sunday, December 1st.
