The concerns over who gets to vote in Montana takes an interesting twist as Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen implements a procedure to cross-reference our voter registration with an immigration database at Homeland Security.
It’s not quite the sweeping changes in President Trumps Executive Order signed last March. In that, anyone who registers to vote must also produce citizenship documents–in addition to the usual methods of identification and residence. That was struck down by a Federal Court, noting that elections are the domain of the states. And the part of the order where state’s must turnover their voter roles to Homeland Security is the subject of various lawsuits. However, it has been noted that Montana is one of the 11-states who appear to be willing to comply with that part of the order.
Many of us received a postcard from Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen, saying that Montana will not tolerate illegal voters.
Here in Flathead County, the implementation of all this falls with our newly-created Elections Department Dir. Paula Buff.
