So far this wildfire season, crews have been able to quash each wildfire before another major fire begins. Such is the case with the latest major fire, the Wolf Syrup Fire, burning 22 miles southeast of Libby. At 140 acres, the fire — which started last Wednesday — is already 88% contained. Crews from DNRC, the U.S. Forest Service and CSKT, along with aerial support are keeping this one in check.
The last major wildfire to be stopped is the Jericho Mountain Fire, a lightning-caused fire burning about 5 miles south of McDonald Pass, west of Helena. First reported last Sunday morning, it has grown to 351 acres with no containment.
Earlier, the Hilger Valley Fire, 20 miles north of Helena, is now stopped at 288 acres and fully-contained. The Sawlog Fire, near Wisdom and the Banana Lake Fire, near Plains, remain in mop-up stage.
As of Monday afternoon, 15 wildfires are burning in the state and of those, just one began since Sunday.
