Snow Geese Return To Freezeout Lake

The Snow Geese are returning to Freezeout Lake, just south of Choteau. It’s an annual event, but always a magnificent sight. Tens of thousands of Snow Geese on their annual trek to the arctic, find a comfortable respite along Montana’s front range.

The Freezout Lake Wildlife Management area consumes 12,000-acres of ponds, attracting nearly 230 species of birds, raptors, and non-game birds. But this time of the year, it’s all about the Snow Geese. And thousands of people line the shores to view this spectacular event. Hotels in Choteau and Augusta are filled this time of year so if you’re planning to stay more than a few hours, it’s good to check to see if accommodations in the area are available.

Every year it’s different, we’re told. FWP monitors these things and tells us there may be fewer birds this year because lake levels are down. That means the Geese might skip Montana and head for Canadian waters. Those who are counting, tells us at any time during this particular season, as many as 50,000 birds might be resting on Freezeout Lake.
