The St Mary Siphon began sending water downstream to the Milk River last Wednesday but it still hasn’t reached Havre — a journey that usually takes 10-12 days.
The St Mary Siphon was built over 100 years ago to bring water from the St Mary River, east of Glacier Park, in to the Milk River to serve farms and communities along the High Line. About 18 months ago, it failed and much of the area went dry. Nearly 110,000 acres are served water originating at the Siphon.
With the help of our Congressional Delegation, work was funded to rebuild the siphon and built it using modernized steel pipes and reinforced concrete.
