There’s big trouble brewing in our elementary schools with the gap between state and local funding. The state’s formula that pays 80% of the districts’ costs is dwindling, requiring the local districts to up their 20% share.
Our Kalispell Elementary Schools will be requesting a $1.1-million general fund levy to avoid major budget cuts. The School Board has been told that several increases in costs, including health insurance premiums coupled with reduced State funding make the levy request a necessity.
Other districts, including Fairmont-Egan, Cayuse Prairie, Deer Park and Helena Flats will be asking voters to approve levies on May 5th.
