They figure it’s about time they got paid for their work on the Whitefish City Council. This is the only city in the Flathead where the Mayor and Council are volunteer positions. That proposition was approved last November when the City Charter was updated to allow for a paid City Council.
In the proposal they’ll consider Monday night, the mayor would receive a salary of $14,000 with an annual stipend of $6,000 and a WAVE membership. All that adds up to around $20,000. City Council members would also receive a $14,000 salary, the WAVE membership and a stipend of $3,000. That totals up to $17,000. They can also opt-in for health insurance at their own expense.
All this will cost the city $128,000. It’s hoped that if Mayor and Council positions are paid, more people will become members of the Council and run for Mayor.
