Sweetgrass Border Road To Close

The Department of Homeland Security plans to close the Border Road, a simple, flat, 8-miles of gravel road that runs parallel to the US-Canada border this summer. The road between the Sweet Grass Hills region and Coutts, where the actual border crossing exists, runs east-west along the American side of the border, keeping in mind that the border is just a line on a map. There are few fences and no guard-shacks along the road. Because of increased illegal border crossings, Homeland Security wants the road closed.

This is in the heart of farming country–on both sides of the border where farmers’ fields oftentimes exist on both sides. It has been a staple of the people living there for over 8-decades.

The solution? The Canadian government is already building a road–parallel to the border on the Canadian side. When complete–sometime this summer, will look like a split-road with a ditch in-between, which will be the actual border. That new road is costing Canada $8-million and on an expedited plan.

So, Americans who want to use the Border Road will have to use the new Canadian Road after passing through the Sweetgrass Border Station.
