Lake County Adds Murder Charges To Polson Police Chase

Some disturbing information coming out of Lake County District Court about the man who shot a Polson Police Officer Michael Wharton Friday night. We’ve learned that 49-year old Cameron Edward Francis also shot his girlfriend on Valentines Day.

Lake County Attorney James Lapotka says Francis “shot his girlfriend, Kimberley Goodson in the face with a military-style ghost gun, armor piercing ammunition in a high-capacity magazine.”

“He then stole her car and then, ambushed Officer Wharton while trying to flee the homicide scene.

It wasn’t until the following Sunday that her body was discovered in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor at her home in Polson. Her son has called police telling them he hadn’t been able to contact his mother since the previous Friday. He described his mother’s relationship with Francis as “abusive.”

Francis’ bail has been increased to $5-million, as he continues his stay in the Lake County Detention Center.

We’re now being told that Officer Wharton sustained no serious injuries in the shooting that came out of the routine traffic stop. Francis was traveling with no taillights. The Police Cruiser was disabled from the shooting, however.

Francis was arrested in the Elmo area, about 15-miles north of Polson with the assistance of Flathead Tribal Police.
