An effort to amend the State Constitution capping property tax increases to 2% per year will not appear on the November ballot. The signature-gathering effort, lead by Sen. Wyle Galt, (pictured) a Republican from Martinsdale, has been suspended.
He tells us that feedback he received from businesses, public officials and individuals, lead him to the decision to stop gathering signatures. It seems, from the information he’s receiving, that the desire is for a more holistic approach to solving the property tax issues. He’s expecting that solution will emerge in the upcoming legislative session, beginning in early January.
One of the biggest push-backs signature-gatherers received was the limiting of local school levies to 2%. He maintains, however, that this proposal would have excluded public school levies from that 2% cap.
