In the tiny town of Froid, about 14-miles north of Culbertson along Hwy 2 in Eastern, Montana, residents are welcoming one of their own, mechanic Roberto Orozco-Ramirez back to town. For the past 100-days, he’s been in the Cascade County Jail in Great Falls after being picked-up by ICE back on January 27th. He’s charged with illegally re-entering the country–a felony. The Montana Free Press is reporting that he has been ordered released by Federal Judge Brian Morris who ruled that his continued detention was unlawful. Judge Morris called the Trump administration’s interpretation of the longstanding immigration law “erroneous”, saying that people accused of entering the country illegally have a right to due process.
He continues, saying “Such indifference from the executive branch to the Constitution’s guarantee of freedom from arbitrary confinement represents grave cause for concern.”
The town of Froid–population 195, is conservative politically, but most residents are hoping for a resolution that’ll allow Ramirez to remain in their town, along with his family–all U-S citizens. They’ve pooled their resources, raising tens of thousands of dollars for his legal fund.
