Glacier Park Rangers find themselves investigating yet another bear attack this season…this time on the Grinnell Glacier Trail, at Many Glacier. The trail is closed as the investigation continues.
We’re now beginning to get some details from the National Park Service. The incident happened last Thursday, just after noon, about 3 1/2 miles up the trail.
Earlier, from a FaceBook posting we learned, from one of the hikers on the trail at the time. He was hiking up the Grinnell Glacier Trail near Lake Josephine when another hiker came running down the trail, yelling something about a bear attack up ahead.
Now back up the trail, where a 32-year old man was surprised by a bear, who rushed him–breaking his arm. He told Park Rangers that the loud rushing water along the trail made it difficult to detect the bear. Nearby hikers stepped-in, providing initial medical aid. The cell-phone’s 9-1-1 call hit the emergency satellite connection. That summonsed Park Staff. ALERT flew in, taking the man to the Logan Health E-R.
Meanwhile, that second group on the trail decided to head back down the trail. That’s when they ran into, what looked like a brown bear, heading up the trail. That bear, he says, was more curious than aggressive and didn’t bother them.
The Grinnell Glacier Trail is still closed. An earlier bear attack on the Mount Brown Trail resulted in the death of 33-year old Anthony Pollilo of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
